Certified Grief Educator, author, animal trainer and founder of PerPETual Love

Ann Harris is a Certified Grief Educator, author of PerPETual Love: Forever In Your Heart, animal trainer and founder of PerPETual Love.

Ann’s work brings together a lifetime with animals and more than 35 years of working with them. Her own experiences of loving and losing many different species, together with what she has witnessed in others when an animal they love has passed, have shaped the work she does today.

PerPETual Love now provides free pet-loss support and resources that have reached more than 2,600 pet owners, while Ann’s work has also expanded into the veterinary profession, helping teams support pet owners through grief, loss and difficult decisions, respond when grief turns to anger or blame, and manage the emotional load this work can place on them.

But the story began long before PerPETual Love had a name.

My Story – The Heart Behind the Work

Ann Harris animal lover

Why PerPETual Love Began

Animals have been part of Ann’s life for as long as she can remember, beginning with her first cat, Nikki, and continuing through a lifetime shared with many different species.

Over the years she has loved and lost many animals herself.

What began with puppy and dog training naturally evolved into something much broader. Over more than 35 years, Ann found herself working with people and animals in many different settings, teaching dog safety to children, training animals for television and film, and supporting the human-animal bond in many different ways.

Through the mobile animal farm she founded, Ann also had the privilege of working with a wide range of people and communities, bringing joy to children at parties, schools, and events, and taking animals in to bring comfort and smiles in disability services, aged care and hospitals.

Across training, animal-assisted work, television, community work and everyday conversations with pet owners, Ann saw again and again just how strong the connection between people and animals could be, and how deeply people could be affected when an animal they loved had passed.

So the significance of pet loss was not new to her.

But when her much-loved Labrador Matilda passed on 14 March 2020, it became deeply personal in a different way.

Matilda had worked alongside Ann in puppy classes and animal-assisted work, appeared on film sets and brought joy to thousands of people through therapy visits and community work. Her loss brought together Ann’s own experiences, everything she had witnessed through her years working with animals, and a growing understanding of how often pet grief is underestimated.

That became the turning point.

Ann went on to become a Certified Grief Educator through David Kessler and began writing PerPETual Love: Forever In Your Heart, which was released in March 2025.

From there, the work grew in a new direction.

Today, PerPETual Love provides free pet-loss support and resources that have reached more than 2,600 pet owners across Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

It has also expanded into the veterinary profession, with a 6-Step Pet Loss Support Pathway that clinics can offer selected clients, and the CPD course Supporting Pet Owners Through Loss – While Looking After Yourself Too, created for veterinarians, veterinary nurses, technicians, receptionists and practice managers.

The work may look different from Ann’s earlier years in animal-assisted work, but the purpose has remained closely connected: helping people through the profound impact animals can have on our lives.

Today, that means helping pet owners feel better understood through grief and loss, while also helping veterinary teams support those clients, respond when grief turns to anger or blame, and manage the emotional load this work can place on them.

The work now brings together the three parts of Ann’s life that once seemed separate: a lifetime with animals, the experience of loving and losing them, and a commitment to helping both pet owners and veterinary teams feel better supported around pet loss.

My Story – The Heart Behind the Work

Animals have always been at the centre of my life - not just as companions, but as teachers, healers, and friends. From my very first cat, Nikki, to the many animals I’ve been lucky to call family, I’ve always felt a deep connection with them.

What began as puppy and dog training naturally evolved into something more. Over the years, I found myself helping people and their animals through joyful moments and difficult ones - teaching dog safety to children, training animals for TV and film, and supporting the human–animal bond in every way I could.

Through our mobile farm, I had the privilege of working with a wide range of people and communities - bringing joy to children at parties, schools, and events, while also offering meaningful animal therapy experiences for children and adults with disabilities, aged care residents, mental health patients, and children affected by trauma.

But everything changed the day I lost Matilda. She wasn’t just my Labrador — she was my heart dog. My faithful companion, my best friend, my soulmate. Her loss broke me open in a way I never expected. And in the middle of that heartbreak, something quietly shifted. I knew I had to do more to support others who felt this same kind of pain - the pain so many feel, yet often carry alone.

That journey led me to become a certified grief educator, write PerPETual Love - Forever In Your Heart, and create this gentle, supportive space. My hope is to offer comfort, understanding, and a reminder that your love was real, your grief is valid, and you don’t have to walk this path alone.

The Purpose Behind the Work

Ann’s work is grounded in a deep respect for the relationships people share with animals, and an understanding of how profoundly those relationships can affect our lives.

For pet owners, that means recognising that grief after the loss of an animal can be significant, complex and sometimes misunderstood. People may be facing euthanasia decisions, anticipatory grief, guilt, regret or simply trying to adjust to life without an animal who was part of their everyday world.

For veterinary teams, it means recognising the other side of those same experiences. They are often supporting people through grief, loss and difficult decisions, responding when grief turns to anger or blame, while carrying the emotional impact of those conversations themselves.

Ann’s work brings those two sides together.

For pet owners, the focus is on free education, resources and support to help them understand what they may be experiencing.

The aim is to give pet owners clear information and support through grief and loss, while giving veterinary teams practical words for euthanasia and grief conversations, ways to respond when grief turns to anger or blame, and tools to reduce the emotional toll of this work and look after themselves too.

For Veterinary Teams

Vets, vet nurses, receptionists, technicians and practice managers.

Veterinary teams are often beside pet owners during euthanasia decisions, grief and loss, and may also be on the receiving end when grief turns to anger or blame.

At the same time, these conversations can take an emotional toll on the people providing the care.

Ann’s veterinary work addresses both sides.

Through the 6-Step Pet Loss Support Pathway, clinics can simply hand selected clients the information, and the client can choose whether to access the free support and resources.

Ann also created the CPD course Supporting Pet Owners Through Loss – While Looking After Yourself Too, giving veterinarians, veterinary nurses, technicians, receptionists and practice managers practical words for euthanasia and grief conversations, ways to respond to anger and blame, and tools to help reduce the emotional toll of this work.

The course carries 1 CPD point through AVA VetEd and 1.25 AVNAT CPD points for veterinary nurses and technicians.
